Overview

Marine swing check valve is a critical valve installed in a vessel's piping system, allowing unidirectional flow of fluids (liquids or gases) while automatically preventing backflow. Its core function is to protect upstream equipment (such as pumps and compressors) and the system from backflow shock, maintain system pressure, and ensure safe and reliable process operation.

Main Applications

Swing check valves are primarily used to prevent backflow of media. This is their primary function. When a pump or compressor stops, or system pressure drops, they prevent downstream media (water, oil, steam, air, etc.) from flowing back into upstream equipment or pipelines due to gravity or pressure differentials. This prevents backflow-induced water hammer, impeller reversal (especially critical for pumps), and pressure fluctuations, thereby protecting critical equipment such as pumps, compressors, boilers, and heat exchangers from damage.

Working Principle

The operating principle of a swing check valve is based on fluid dynamics and gravity (or auxiliary forces):

Opening (forward flow): When upstream pressure exceeds downstream pressure (i.e., when the medium is flowing in a forward direction), the fluid pushes the disc off the valve seat. The disc is pivoted upward (or sideways) by a rocker lever, opening it and creating a flow path. The opening angle typically ranges from 0° to 90°. When fully open, the disc is nearly parallel to the flow direction, providing minimal flow resistance.

Holding Open: The valve remains open as long as forward flow continues and the pressure is sufficient to overcome the disc's own weight (and any auxiliary closing forces, such as springs).

Closing (preventing backflow): When forward flow ceases (e.g., when a pump stops) or when downstream pressure exceeds upstream pressure, the forward thrust ceases.

Under the influence of gravity (and a slight force from reverse flow or the force of an auxiliary spring/weight), the disc begins to rotate downward (or back).

Main Parts of Marine Swing Check Valve

The marine swing check valve is mainly composed of a valve body, a valve cover, a valve disc and a rocker. The valve disc is disc-shaped and rotates around the pin outside the valve seat channel.
