A Marine Deck Drain is a deck-mounted fitting installed flush with or slightly recessed into a vessel's weather deck, interior deck, or tank top. Its primary function is to collect rainwater, spray, washdown water, or spilled liquids and channel them safely overboard or to a holding tank via an attached piping system. The top of the drain is covered by a heavy-duty grating or perforated plate that allows water to pass through while preventing large debris, cargo residue, and personnel foot traffic from entering the drain pipe. Marine deck drains are critical components of the vessel's drainage and dewatering system, working in conjunction with scupper plugs and overboard discharge valves to maintain deck dryness and watertight integrity.

1. Applicable Standards and Design Philosophy
Our Marine Deck Drains are designed and manufactured in accordance with the following guiding standards and requirements:

  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Chapter II-2: Fire safety requirements relevant to deck penetrations and overboard discharge arrangements.

  • IACS UR (Unified Requirements): Structural strength and weather-tightness requirements for deck fittings and penetrations.

  • Classification Society Rules: ABS, DNV, LR, BV, CCS, NK, KR, RINA, and other IACS members have specific requirements for deck drainage system capacity, material suitability, and overboard discharge prevention.

  • Flange and Connection Standards: Outlet flanges or pipe threads are supplied to match your vessel’s piping class—DIN EN 1092-1 (PN10/PN16), JIS B2220 (5K/10K), ASME B16.5 (Class 150), or GB/T 2501.

  • Material Standards: Raw materials comply with applicable international standards for castings, forgings, and rolled products (e.g., ASTM, EN, JIS, GB).

2. Comprehensive Material Selection
We offer deck drains in a full range of marine-grade materials to suit the deck location, cargo type, and vessel design life:

  • Cast Iron / Ductile Iron: The most economical choice for general cargo vessel weather decks and ballast tank tops. Hot-dip galvanized or coated with high-build marine epoxy for long-term corrosion protection.

  • Cast Steel / Carbon Steel: Selected when higher mechanical strength and impact resistance are needed, such as on heavy-load vehicle decks and offshore platforms. Protected by hot-dip galvanizing or specialized coating systems.

  • Bronze (Gunmetal): The traditional choice for seawater-washed decks, offering inherent corrosion resistance, non-sparking properties, and a long service history in marine service. Ideal for tanker and yacht deck drains.

  • Stainless Steel (AISI 316L / Duplex): The premium, maintenance-free material. Provides absolute resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater, aggressive cleaning chemicals, and sour cargo vapors. Mandatory for chemical tankers, product carriers, cruise ships, naval vessels, and potable water drainage systems.

  • Aluminum: A lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative for weight-critical applications such as high-speed craft, offshore aluminum superstructures, and helicopter decks. Supplied with anodized or coated finishes.

3. Design Configurations and Construction Features
We manufacture deck drains in several standard configurations to meet every drainage application:

  • Standard Gravity Drain with Grating: A flanged or threaded body cast integrally with a flat or dished top flange. The top opening is covered by a removable, heavy-duty grating or slotted plate, designed to support pedestrian or light vehicle loads while screening out debris. The grating is hinged or secured with stainless steel bolts to prevent loss in a seaway.

  • Deck Drain with Integral Non-Return Valve (Check Valve): For overboard discharge below the waterline or in areas where backflow is a risk, the drain body incorporates a hinged flap, ball, or spring-loaded check valve. This automatically prevents seawater ingress while allowing free drainage outwards.

  • Deck Drain with Sediment Bucket and Odor Trap: For interior decks, galley, and sanitary spaces, the drain includes a removable perforated sediment bucket and a water seal (P-trap or S-trap) to prevent odor and vermin passage from the piping system. Cleanout access is provided.

  • Deck Drain for Watertight Plugging: The drain body is machined with a smooth taper or a female thread to accept a matching scupper plug (brass, stainless steel, or rubber). When the plug is inserted, the drain becomes a completely watertight closure, essential for pollution prevention and emergency damage control.

  • Tank Top Drain (Low-Profile): A compact, heavy-duty drain designed for cargo hold and ballast tank bottoms, with a low-profile grating to prevent damage from grabs, bulldozers, or cargo handling.

  • Rapid Water Evacuation: The open area of the grating and the bore of the outlet are calculated to handle maximum expected rainfall, washdown, or firefighting water flow rates without pooling on deck.

  • Robust Load-Bearing Grating: Gratings are rated to withstand specified point and uniformly distributed loads, preventing deformation from foot traffic, hand trolleys, or light vehicles. Heavy-duty versions are available for ro-ro decks and helicopter decks.

  • Corrosion Protection Matched to the Environment: Material and coating selection ensures that the drain body, grating, and fasteners remain fully functional and free of wastage for the design life of the vessel.

  • Blockage Prevention and Easy Cleaning: Removable gratings and sediment buckets allow crew to clear debris and sediment quickly without dismantling piping. Water traps are designed for easy rodding.

  • Integration with Plug and Valve Systems: The drain outlet can be connected directly to an overboard discharge pipe, and the body can be fitted with a captive plug to seal the drain when required, offering full operational flexibility.

  • Non-Sparking Options: Bronze and stainless steel gratings and bodies are inherently non-sparking, critical for tanker and gas carrier deck installations in hazardous zones.
