Marine Deck Valve
A Marine Deck Valve is a robust, manually operated or actuated shutoff valve specifically engineered for installation on the exposed weather deck of a vessel. Unlike valves located inside the machinery space, a deck valve is directly subjected to the harshest marine environment: continuous salt‑laden spray, rain, heavy seas, ultraviolet radiation, wide temperature swings, and physical impact from cargo operations or foot traffic. It is typically a flanged globe, angle globe, gate, butterfly, or ball valve, designed to provide reliable isolation and flow control for cargo, ballast, fire main, fuel transfer, tank cleaning, and other critical piping that runs on or above the main deck. The valve features a weatherproof stem sealing system, a rising stem or position indicator for clear remote status indication, a robust handwheel or enclosed gearbox for gloved operation, and a heavy‑duty corrosion protection system. Where the pipe penetrates the deck, the valve can be installed directly on the penetration flange, forming a watertight seal that prevents water ingress into the spaces below.

1. Application
Marine Deck Valves are installed on all exposed deck piping systems where manual or remote isolation, flow diversion, or tank access is required from the deck level:
Cargo Oil, Chemical, and Product Lines: Main isolation valves on tanker deck manifolds, drop lines, crossovers, and tank cleaning returns.
Ballast and Bilge Systems: Deck‑operated valves for ballast tank isolation, overboard discharge, and bilge line dewatering.
Fire Main and Foam Systems: Hydrant isolation valves, foam concentrate supply valves, and monitor control valves, often required to be operable from the deck.
Fuel Oil Bunkering and Transfer: Manual or quick‑closing deck valves at bunker stations and fuel tank penetrations, with fire‑safe construction.
Tank Cleaning and Stripping Systems: Valves for supplying seawater or heated water to fixed tank cleaning machines.

2. Material Specifications
Materials are selected for maximum corrosion resistance and mechanical durability in the exposed deck environment, in accordance with material standards (ASTM, EN, JIS, GB):
Body & Bonnet:
Cast Steel (ASTM A216 WCB, EN 1.0619, SCPH2, ZG230‑450): The standard for high‑pressure cargo, steam, and fire main valves. Protected by a multi‑layer marine epoxy coating or hot‑dip galvanizing.
Ductile Iron (ASTM A536 Gr. 65‑45‑12, EN‑GJS‑400‑15, FCD400, QT400‑18): Economical and strong for ballast, bilge, and general water services. Heavy‑duty epoxy coating is standard.
Bronze/Gunmetal (CuSn10, BC6, ZCuSn10Zn2): Inherently corrosion‑resistant and non‑sparking. The traditional choice for seawater, fire main, and fuel oil deck valves. Requires no coating.
Stainless Steel (AISI 316L / 1.4404 / CF8M, Duplex): Premium, maintenance‑free material for aggressive chemicals, hygienic water, chemical tankers, and naval vessels. Requires no external coating.
Trim (Disc, Seat, Gate, Ball):
Renewable stainless steel, Monel, or bronze seating surfaces, precision‑lapped for metal‑to‑metal shutoff.
Soft‑seat options (EPDM, NBR, PTFE, FKM) for bubble‑tight closure on clean services.
Stem & Weather Sealing:
Stainless steel stem with an external acme thread (rising stem) for clear position indication.
Deep stuffing box with multiple rings of graphite or PTFE packing, protected by an external O‑ring and wiper ring to prevent water and salt ingress. Grease fittings allow in‑situ lubrication.
Handwheel & Gearbox: Heavy‑duty cast iron (coated) or stainless steel handwheel sized for gloved operation. Fully enclosed, grease‑filled gearboxes for larger sizes and higher pressure classes.
Fasteners: All external bolting (bonnet, gland, flange) is stainless steel (AISI 316) or equivalent to prevent atmospheric corrosion.

Temperature Range: ‑29 °C to +425 °C for cast steel valves with graphite packing; bronze and stainless steel valves cover ‑196 °C to +280 °C depending on material and seat.
Weatherproof Stem Sealing: The stuffing box is tested under a water‑spray test to confirm that no water enters the packing area when the valve is operated in the fully open and fully closed positions.
Fire‑Safe Construction (optional): Valves for fuel oil and flammable cargo services are available with API 607 / ISO 10497 fire‑safe certification, incorporating graphite packing, a metal secondary seat, and anti‑static grounding.
Actuation: All manual deck valves can be supplied with an ISO 5211 mounting pad for electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuation. Actuators are weatherproofed to IP65 or IP68.
Testing & Certification:
Every valve is hydrostatically shell‑tested at 1.5× rated pressure and seat‑tested at 1.1× rated pressure per API 598 or EN 12266‑1.
Full EN 10204 Type 3.1 material certificates are provided for body, bonnet, stem, trim, and pressure‑containing components.

The valve’s overall height (from the deck to the top of the handwheel or gearbox) is designed to allow comfortable operation by a standing crew member, typically 800 mm to 1200 mm above the deck.
For valves with a deck stand or pedestal, the mounting base is a flanged column or socket that bolts to the deck penetration flange, creating a rigid, vibration‑resistant support.
Tolerances: All critical machined dimensions — bolt circle diameter, bolt hole size, gasket seating face flatness, stem straightness, and flange alignment — are held to the tolerances specified in the applicable flange and valve standards.
