JIS Butterfly Valve

JIS Butterfly Valve

A JIS Marine Butterfly Valve is a quarter-turn flow control device engineered specifically for shipboard systems in accordance with Japanese Industrial Standards. Its design, face-to-face dimensions, flange drilling, materials, and testing procedures fully conform to JIS norms, ensuring seamless integration with other JIS-standard piping components commonly found on vessels built in Japan, Korea, and across Asia.

Overview

1. Applicable Standards and Design Basis
Our JIS Marine Butterfly Valves are designed and manufactured to the following key normative documents:

  • JIS F7480: The primary standard for marine butterfly valves, specifying types, nominal sizes, pressure ratings, construction, and performance requirements.

  • JIS F7400: General inspection and testing requirements for marine valves, covering shell strength and seat leakage tests.

  • JIS B2220 / JIS B2239: Steel pipe flanges and marine pipe flanges, defining the mating dimensions for 5K, 10K, and 16K classes.

  • JIS G5502 / JIS G5121: Material specifications for ductile iron (FCD400/FCD450) and stainless steel castings (SCS13, SCS14), ensuring body and disc integrity.

2. Material Selection for Marine Service
Materials are chosen to withstand seawater corrosion, high humidity, and aggressive shipboard fluids:

  • Body: Ductile iron JIS FCD400 or stainless steel SCS13 (304 eq.) / SCS14 (316 eq.) with high-build epoxy coating for long-term protection.

  • Disc: Bronze, duplex stainless steel, or SCS14, selected for excellent seawater corrosion resistance.

  • Seat/Liner: Replaceable EPDM (standard for seawater and freshwater) or NBR (for oil service) vulcanized liner, extending over the flange face to form a built-in gasket, eliminating the need for separate seals.

  • Shaft: Stainless steel (SUS304 or SUS316 equivalent) with anti-blowout design, supported by self-lubricating polymer bearings that prevent galvanic corrosion and seizure.

3. Key Technical Features

  • Bubble-Tight Shutoff: Bidirectional zero-leakage sealing meeting the highest seat tightness class per JIS F7400 testing.

  • Compact Short Face-to-Face: Designed for space-constrained engine rooms and pump rooms, with minimal weight and installation envelope.

  • Self-Gasketing Flange Connection: The integrated liner eliminates the need for additional flange gaskets, guaranteeing a perfect seal to JIS 5K/10K/16K flanges.

  • Actuator-Ready Interface: Standard ISO 5211 top mounting pad allows direct attachment of lever handles, worm gearboxes, or automated actuators (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic).

  • Low Maintenance Operation: The shaft runs on non-metallic, lubricant-free bearings, ensuring consistent low torque and freedom from corrosion-induced sticking even after prolonged inactivity.

4. Typical Marine Applications

  • Main and auxiliary seawater cooling circuits

  • Ballast water and bilge systems

  • Firefighting and foam ring-mains

  • Fuel oil and lubricating oil transfer lines

  • Fresh water generators and desalination units

  • Overboard discharge and vent lines

5. Quality Assurance, Testing, and Certification

  • Testing: Every valve is hydraulically shell-tested at 1.5 times the rated pressure and seat-tested at 1.1 times the rated pressure in accordance with JIS F7400, achieving zero visible leakage.

  • Material Traceability: Full EN 10204 Type 3.1 or equivalent JIS material certificates are provided for all pressure-retaining and wetted components.

  • Class Approvals: The valves can be supplied with type approval certificates from major classification societies (NK, DNV, LR, BV, ABS, KR, CCS) upon request. Each body is permanently marked with the heat number, size (JIS DN), pressure rating, material code, and manufacturer’s identification as required by JIS norms.
