DIN Marine Angle Valve
A DIN Marine Angle Valve is a globe-type stop valve with inlet and outlet ports oriented at 90 degrees, designed and manufactured to German DIN and European EN standards for shipboard use. By combining a positive shutoff function with a change in flow direction, it eliminates the need for a separate pipe elbow. This saves installation space, reduces weight, and minimizes potential leak paths. It is widely used for seawater, ballast, bilge, steam, fuel oil, lubricating oil, freshwater, and compressed air service on vessels with metric piping systems.
Overview
1. Applicable Standards and Design Basis
Our DIN Marine Angle Valves are designed, manufactured, and tested in conformity with:
DIN 86058: The primary standard for marine flanged angle valves, covering nominal sizes, pressure ratings, materials, and construction details.
DIN EN 1092-1: Flanges and their joints – circular flanges for pipes, valves, fittings and accessories (PN designated).
DIN EN 12266-1: Industrial valves – testing of metallic valves, governing shell pressure tests and seat tightness acceptance criteria.
DIN EN 1561 / 1563 / 10213: Material standards for grey cast iron, ductile iron, and steel castings used in valve bodies and bonnets.
DIN EN 13709: Industrial valves – steel globe and globe stop and check valves (for reference where shipboard standards align).
2. Material Selection for Severe Marine Service
Materials are specifically chosen for maximum corrosion resistance and long service life under shipboard conditions:
Body & Bonnet: Available in marine-grade grey cast iron EN-GJL-250, ductile iron EN-GJS-400-15, cast steel 1.0619 (GP240GH), or stainless steel 1.4408 (CF8M equivalent). Bronze CuSn10 is also offered for seawater and freshwater. All ferrous bodies receive a heavy-duty, two-component epoxy coating. The bolted bonnet design permits easy disassembly for inspection and repair.
Trim (Seat & Disc): Renewable and lapped stainless steel (1.4021, 1.4404), bronze, or Monel seating surfaces provide reliable metal-to-metal shutoff. For cleaner fluids, soft-seat inserts such as PTFE or reinforced EPDM are available to achieve bubble-tight closure.
Stem: Stainless steel (1.4021, 1.4404) with external acme threads and an integral back-seat shoulder. The stem is precision-machined and polished for smooth operation and extended packing life.
Packing & Gasket: Graphite or PTFE-impregnated packing rings, compressed by an adjustable gland. Bonnet gaskets are reinforced graphite, PTFE, or spiral-wound stainless steel/graphite to suit the service temperature.
3. Key Technical Features
Angle Pattern Design: The 90-degree body layout functions as both a stop valve and a flow elbow, reducing the number of pipe joints and potential leak sources while saving valuable space in tight engine rooms and pump compartments.
Positive Back-Seating: When the valve is fully open, the stem shoulder seals firmly against a back-seat bushing in the bonnet. This allows the packing to be retightened or replaced while the valve is under pressure, providing an additional stem seal and enhancing operational safety.
Full-Guided Disc: The disc is independently guided within the body or by the stem, ensuring chatter-free, smooth performance even during throttling service and significantly reducing seat wear.
Renewable Seating Surfaces: Seat rings and discs are replaceable, extending the working life of the valve without the need for complete replacement.
Manual and Actuator-Ready: Standard configuration includes a rugged handwheel with a rising stem and clear position indication. Gearboxes are supplied for larger nominal sizes and higher pressure ratings. An ISO 5211 mounting pad or adaptable top flange allows direct fitting of electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators.
4. Typical Marine Applications
Seawater cooling overboard discharge and suction lines
Fire main and foam system isolation
Fuel oil and lubricating oil transfer and heater inlet/outlet isolation
Steam and condensate line drains, vents, and isolation
Compressed air and control air distribution
Bilge, ballast, and stripping pump suction and discharge
Tank suction and cross-connection valves
5. Quality Assurance, Testing, and Certification
Testing: Every valve is subjected to a hydrostatic shell test at 1.5 times the rated pressure (PN) and a seat leakage test at 1.1 times PN, in strict accordance with DIN EN 12266-1. Back-seat testing is performed where applicable. Test certificates accompany each shipment.
Material Traceability: Full EN 10204 Type 3.1 material certificates are provided for the body, bonnet, stem, and trim components. Permanent markings include manufacturer’s name, DN, PN, body material code, heat number, and the applicable DIN standard reference.
