ANSI Marine Angle Valve
An ANSI Marine Angle Valve is a globe-type stop valve with inlet and outlet ports oriented at 90 degrees, manufactured to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ASME specifications. By eliminating the need for a separate pipe elbow, it combines flow shutoff and directional change in a single compact body. It is widely used throughout U.S.-built and internationally trading vessels for reliable manual shutoff and throttling in seawater, steam, fuel oil, lubricating oil, and compressed air systems.
Overview
1. Applicable Standards and Design Basis
Our ANSI Marine Angle Valves are designed, manufactured, and tested in accordance with:
ASME B16.34: Valves – Flanged, Threaded, and Welding End, establishing pressure-temperature ratings, wall thickness, and material group assignments.
ASME B16.5: Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings (NPS ½ to 24), covering integral flange drilling and facing for Class 150, 300, and 600.
ASME B16.10: Face-to-Face and End-to-End Dimensions of Valves, ensuring standard center-to-face dimensions for angle-pattern bodies.
API 598: Valve Inspection and Testing, governing shell test pressure, seat leakage acceptance criteria, and supplementary testing.
MSS SP-25: Standard marking system for valves, fittings, flanges and unions, ensuring full traceability and identification.
2. Material Selection for Severe Marine Service
Materials are selected for maximum corrosion resistance and long service life in salt-laden, humid shipboard environments:
Body & Bonnet: Options include ASTM A216 WCB carbon steel with protective coating, ASTM A351 CF8M (316 stainless steel) for superior seawater resistance, and ASTM B62 bronze or nickel-aluminum bronze for traditional seawater and freshwater service. Bolted bonnet or union ring design allows easy internal access.
Trim (Seat & Disc): Renewable stainless steel (ASTM A276 Type 316) or monel seats and discs, lapped to provide positive shutoff. Soft-seat options (PTFE or reinforced EPDM) are available for bubble-tight closure on clean fluids.
Stem: ASTM A276 Type 316 stainless steel, designed with an external acme thread and integral back-seat shoulder, polished to a smooth surface finish for extended packing life.
Packing & Gasket: Graphite or PTFE-impregnated packing rings, compressed by an adjustable gland, ensure reliable stem sealing. Bonnet gaskets are spiral-wound or PTFE.
3. Key Technical Features
Angle Pattern Design: The 90-degree body layout reduces the number of piping joints and potential leak paths by functioning as both a stop valve and a flow-direction change, saving space and reducing installation cost.
Positive Back-Seating: When fully open, the stem shoulder seals against a back-seat bushing in the bonnet, allowing repacking under pressure and providing a secondary stem seal.
Full-Guided Disc: The disc is guided independently in the body or by the stem, ensuring smooth, chatter-free operation even in throttling applications.
Renewable Seating Surfaces: Seat rings and discs are replaceable, extending the valve’s service life without the need for complete valve replacement.
Manual and Actuator-Ready: Standard configuration includes a robust handwheel with rising stem and clear open/closed position indication. Gear operators are available for larger sizes. An ISO 5211 mounting pad or adaptable top flange allows fitting of electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators.

5. Quality Assurance, Testing, and Certification
Testing: Every valve undergoes a hydrostatic shell test at 1.5 times the rated cold working pressure (CWP) and a seat leakage test (metal or soft seat) per API 598. Back-seat tests are performed where applicable.
Material Traceability: Full ASTM material test reports (EN 10204 Type 3.1 equivalent) are supplied for the body, bonnet, stem, and trim components. Permanent markings include manufacturer’s name, NPS, pressure class, body material, heat number, and standard references as required by MSS SP-25.
Class Approvals: Our ANSI Marine Angle Valves can be supplied with type approval certificates from all major IACS classification societies (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, BV, CCS, NK, KR, RINA, etc.), ensuring immediate acceptance during newbuilding and repair surveys.
